Imagine going to the beach and diving into the sea. You see manta rays flying past you, whales singing, maybe a siren. You swim with them and it feels like a dream. You resurface and your heart feels full and content. This is what contemporary dance can feel like.
My name is Roman, I’m a professional dancer and I will guide you through class in a way that allows beginners to feel safe to explore what this dance style feels like and intermediate dancers to deepen their understanding. No previous dance experience is required, just curiosity and comfortable clothes.
Throughout the class, I will be giving instructions about the kind of movement and imagery we go through (e.g. release technique, floorwork, somatic work) while also giving space to explore freely. This is an example of a journey we might go on together:
• Preparing for the dive. You dance best when you have time to connect with your own body, your breath, how you are actually feeling.
• Getting into the water. Movements get bigger, more energetic.
• Enjoying the sea. I offer different scenarios and rule sets to “swim” alone, in couples, as a group.
• Choreographic material. Can we perform set movement and still feel free?
• Integrating what we explored into a group composition and performing.
• Resurfacing, softly preparing body and mind to go back to life on land.
